In "No Pictures Expected, " traditional and contemporary arts collide, defying the conventions of Ukrainian theatre. This production blends classical music, operatic singing, and dramatic storytelling into a tapestry of farce, carnival, grotesque, and irony.
The narrative unravels in a dream-like realm where the unexpected is the norm. Encounters with enigmatic figures, such as the queer Old Woman, set the stage for mystical adventures, driven by the author's rebellion against the unyielding flow of events. The play delves into the lingering horrors and reflections of those who suffered under totalitarian regimes. It's an exploration of how the shadows of the past still influence our thoughts and beliefs. The regime that once punished faith in God now condemns faith in humanity and common sense.
The production seamlessly blends drama and music, with classical compositions by Milhaud, Froberger, and Bach interwoven with modern Ukrainian melodies by composer Kolomiiets. It's a symphonic and emotional journey, bridging the gap between the past and the present. Set against a backdrop of chairs suspended in mid-air, "No Pictures Expected" symbolises the fragile lives disrupted by the cruelties of history and oppressive regimes. The interpretation of this visual metaphor is left to the audience, offering a personalised connection to the narrative. The play invites to challenge conventions, question the echoes of history, and explore the enduring power of creative expression and the human spirit.
